Burnout doesn’t just sneak up on you—it builds quietly over time, leaving you feeling depleted, overwhelmed, and disconnected from the life you want to live. I know this because I’ve been there and had to work hard to find my way back to balance.
As we enter 2025, I want to share the self-care toolkit that has been a game-changer for me.
In this blog post, I share tools and practices designed to nurture your mind, body, and soul and help you overcome burnout permanently.

Reaching Burnout and Learning to Rebuild
Nearly a decade in the nonprofit sector taught me to overextend myself and push past my limits, all in the name of dedication and loyalty. My work ethic helped me climb the ladder for seven years but also led me to a breaking point. I found myself alone, holding together an organization that no longer had the structure or resources to function.
I even gave up a sabbatical I had earned after seven years of service, trusting that the organization and my colleagues—who had always promised to support me—would have my back. That trust was misplaced, and the sacrifice left me depleted. It was then I made a promise to myself: my well-being would always come before my work.
Burnout pushed me to the edge of leaving the nonprofit sector altogether. Recovery wasn’t quick or easy. It required time, intentionality, and a commitment to change. I had to learn to prioritize my needs and care for myself in ways I’d never done before. Those hard-earned lessons now form the foundation of my self-care approach today.
1. Create a Sanctuary for Restful Sleep
When I was at my lowest, I struggled to sleep more than four hours a night. Quality sleep is foundational to recovery, which is why I invested in tools that helped me create a calming bedtime routine:
Weighted Blanket: This is my go-to for easing nighttime anxiety and improving sleep quality. (Try this weighted blanket for ultimate comfort!)
Sunrise Alarm + White Noise Machine: White noise is a must for me to calm my racing thoughts, and this one has many options and a gentle sunrise alarm clock.
2. Prioritize Mental Health Support
I can’t overstate how valuable therapy was in my journey from burnout to balance. Online platforms like Online-Therapy.com make connecting with a licensed therapist on your schedule easy.

3. Build a Gentle Morning Routine
Rushing into the day only added to my stress, so I started prioritizing a slower, more intentional start:
Yoga Mat: Gentle morning stretches became my way of waking up my body and mind. (Check out this yoga mat to get started!)
Gratitude Journal: Reflecting on things I’m thankful for each morning helped shift my mindset. (Here’s my fave!)
4. Incorporate Movement That Feels Good
Exercise isn’t about punishment—it’s about finding joy in movement. I started with daily walks to clear my mind and slowly added in other activities:
Comfortable Walking Shoes: A good, sturdy pair of shoes makes walks more enjoyable.
Fitness Tracker: Tracking your steps and workouts can give you a sense of accomplishment and motivation. You can use your phone, a smartwatch or smart ring, or even an old-school pedometer.
